United Nations Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip the following week.
He became provisional head of state following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out the former president in December 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of internal conflict.
Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions in his role as head of the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and supportive states for backing of Syria and its people."
Upcoming White House Meeting
Sharaa's White House visit on Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The pair met on their first occasion this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the region.
After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".
His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria until he severed ties in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
Monday's visit is not the president's debut journey to the US in the current year. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.
During his address, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
