Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
