Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
